The Spirit of Osiris and Hathor

This journey will carry you on a swift visit to one of the most sacred sites of ancient Egypt, Dendera and Abydos.

You will first be taken to and introduced to the sacred city of Abydos. As one of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt, Abydos was the site of many ancient temples, and a royal necropolis where early pharaohs were entombed.

Later in the afternoon, your journey will continue on exploring the Temple of Dendera, which originally housed the famous Zodiac of Dendera. This bas-relief with human and animal figures represented the night sky, and was found on the ceiling of a chapel in the Temple of Hathor, where the mysteries of the resurrection of the God Osiris were celebrated.

Egyptologists concluded this only should be interpreted as being no other than a map of the sky rather than a giant horoscope or a perpetual astrological tool!

The Temple of Seti l (Abydos): Just by a 3-hour driving distance along with your Egyptologist, you will reach the Great Temple of Seti I. After several restorations, this temple is indeed one of the most complete, unique, and beautiful temples in Egypt!

With exquisite decoration and plenty of atmosphere, it is the main attraction. Even though the nearby Osireion is also wrapped in mystery and the desert views are spectacular, the Temple of Seti is structured in a remarkably great limestone as an unusual L-shape rather than rectangular. It includes seven great doorways, which were dedicated to the six major gods–Osiris, Isis, Horus, Amun-Ra, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah– as also to Seti I himself (1294–1279 BC).

Less than 50 years after the end of the Amarna -heresy- when Pharaoh Akhenaten broke with tradition by creating a new religion, capital and artistic style – this was a clear attempt to revive the old ways. They say, when you roam through Seti’s dark halls and sanctuaries, a magical dark force of mystery may haunt  you!

The Temple of Dendera: Later in the afternoon, you will be driven to Dendera, where The Temple of Hathor is one of the most well-preserved antiquity sites in Egypt today, and is an excellent example of traditional pharaonic architecture.

This temple was built primarily during the Ptolemaic Dynasty, which was a period of Greek rule in Egypt. This particular site acted as a center of the cult of Hathor. It was believed that during a period known as the Happy Reunion, Hathor would journey from her temple at Dendera to spend some time with her husband, Horus, at his temple in Edfu.

Legends state this “reunion” was a yearly occurrence, when the end of the celebration by Hathor returning to Dendera marked the signal for the official beginning of the flood season of the Nile!
